Brandon Moak, Students with Disabilities Representative

Hello student body of Seattle U! Welcome to your weekly update on what your student government is currently doing for you! We were very excited to see so many people looking at the minutes last week. We hope to keep you informed every week here on Tumblr!

Highlights from our meeting this week include the formation of the Students with Disabilities Representative position which is currently filled by Brandon Moak. We also had guest speaker Kelly , the head of the Center for Service and Community Engagement, come speak to us about the Youth Initiative and plans for the year.

If you would like to find out more about last week’s meeting and what your representatives are doing for you please read on!

Major Take-Aways from the 10/9/2013 Meeting:

1. Kelly Benkert, the Assistant Director of Student Leadership, came to talk to SGSU about the Center for Service and Community Engagement, which is located below the Douglas Apartments on 13th and Cherry. We were amazed to hear about the 70-80 partner organizations that students are taking part in, but even more amazed that around 25% of employees at our community organizations are Seattle U grads. The Center for Service is committed to connecting learning to service. To find out how you can get involved just go to the Center for Service and Community Engagement Website and find out how you can Serve Local.

2. We further discussed the Tobacco Free Campus Exploration Community, lead by At-Large Rep Austin Kawano. Austin presented SGSU with updates on where the community is headed, and plans to have a report ready by the end of this quarter so stay tuned!

3. SGSU President Eric Chalmers sought a motion to approve the creation of the Students with Disabilities Position and to approve a memo to instate appointee Brandon Moak (Memo included at the end of the minutes!) as a new representative. The motion, moved by Austin, passed unanimously. We are all excited for Brandon’s plans this year, and about the Spectator article from last week on the Coalition for Students with Disabilities. Welcome to the team Brandon!

4. We finished with a discussion of everyone’s plans for the week. Bharat is incredibly excited that the first appropriations meeting is coming up on Saturday, October 19th! and the US Bank Seminar is on October 29th. Brandon already got started at his position by meeting with the head of Disabilities Services. Finally, Brady Carlson, VP of University Affairs is looking for committee members for university committees so make sure to visit our Committees Page to find out more!

Until next week, we’re SGSU and we represent YOU! If you want to come by our meeting tonight, we’ll be meeting in the Admissions and Alumni Building at 6:00 PM! We are always open to public comment.
